© Charles ChandlerNebuchadrezzar II of Babylon defeated the southern kingdom of Judah, and took the ruling class into captivity. Some argue that this was the captivity described in Exodus. Others argue that putting the priests all together in a Babylonian prison gave them the opportunity to get together on their story, and they developed the Priestly version of the Torah.
