1329 Horemheb became the senior vizier.
© Charles Chandler

Horemheb was promoted to commander-in-chief of the army, minister of foreign affairs, senior vizier, and heir apparent to Tutankhamun. On Horemheb's insistence, Tut moved the capital back to Thebes, and reinstated the Amunists, ending the Atenist regime. Amarna was abandoned. The quarry workers were relocated to Avaris, while the high priests were sent into exile.1:53 This included Ramose, Meryre II, Panehesy, and Thutmose (as Moses, Merari, Phinehas, and Aaron). The complete entourage of exiles could have included dozens of people, or perhaps hundreds. The exile order was amicable, since Ramose and his followers were respected by the people of Egypt,2 and the exiles were allowed to gather up subsidies from their neighbors before leaving.3,4 Then they headed for the Egyptian frontier (i.e., Canaan), home to all other Egyptian exiles, including the Hyksos three centuries earlier, and more recently, Abraham and Sarah.
