© Charles ChandlerTo counter the advance of the Levites, Jacob (48 years old) agreed to an alliance with Shechem, on the condition that all of the males in the city get circumcised. The Levites countered by slaughtering the Shechemites. Jacob responded to that by gathering up all of the loot and giving it to the pharaoh, who designated him as Isaac's heir apparent. The pharaoh also gave Jacob the new name of Israel.
