Support for Binary Uploads

One of the things that normal document management systems do, and that some of the online content management systems also support, is uploading binary files so that geographically distributed workgroups can share files that are frequently in binary format. FTP servers are a nuisance to maintain, and proprietary systems that support this are generally expensive. An affordable alternative would be useful.

Of course, there would have to be limits on the amount of space used, or people would load it up with hard-drive backups that they would never even bother to delete. So the space requirements in QDL would have to apply. Registered users only get 1 MB of space for free. Advanced users get 10 MB, and Professional users get 100 MB. More space could be offered, for more money.

There are cheaper ways of hosting files, so people will complain that QDL is charging too much money for disk space. But QDL is more than just a file hosting service — somebody has to pay for all of this additional functionality that QDL has. :)

The way to do this would be to make the "file" correspond to the QDL page. So in addition to being able to "add a new sub-page", you would also be able to upload a file. If it was a text file, the contents of the file would go into the page, and you'd be able to edit it in QDL. If it was a binary file, the disclosure widget would be replaced with an icon appropriate for that binary file format. Clicking the icon would download the file, because that would be the closest equivalent to opening the page in QDL. You would still be able to "edit" a binary file, so that you could get to the rights settings, but there wouldn't be anything in the editor window, since it would merely be a data source.

The corresponding action menu behaviors would be straight-forward. Deleting the item would mark the page as deleted, and mulching it would delete the file from the server, and remove the QDL page from the system. Cutting and copying links would work the same as for any other page. Pasting a link into the page would be disabled.

The initial implementation of this is complete. See the documentation at:

In the future, support for storing binary files as binary data within the database will be added. The reason to do this is so that such data can gain the benefit of the QDL rights system. So you'll control accessibility to the "file" by setting the rights on the wrapper page.
