When you delete a page, you have the option of deleting all links to it, or leaving a breadcrumb behind. Another option could be to alter the existing links to point to the parent page, assuming that if somebody linked to a page, they still want to link to something in that area, and if what they linked to has been deleted, then what they really want to link to might nevertheless be in that general vicinity. But if this happens, there should be a message or something that says that this is not what you originally linked to.
