I think that I solved most of the problem by consolidating all of the alerts concerning a single post into a single alert. For example, if you're watching a thread, and somebody posts into it, you'll get an alert. If somebody else posts into the same thread, before you would have gotten a new alert, but now, the same alert is re-opened, with the info about both posts. So you will only ever have in your "QDL / My... / Messages / Received" folder a number of alerts equal to the number of pages you're watching, not one for every event.
