Kristian Birkeland: Auroral Currents
Kristian Birkeland
Kristian Birkeland (1867~1917)
Birkeland didn't really have a solar model, but he did do the pioneering work on the behavior of electric currents in space under the influence of magnetic fields.1 This was the breakthrough in understanding the Earth's aurora. He thought that the charges came from sunspots, while we now know that they emanate from the Sun all of the time.
