This fully-illustrated catalogue of highlights of the Egyptian collection at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago is the first publication that makes the material accessible to scholars and to the general public. A brief history of the collection is followed by a catalogue of seventy-seven objects that date from the early third millennium b.c. to the eighth century a.d. A wide variety of artifacts is represented, including statues, stelae, tools, games, clothing, coffins, figured ostraca, and papyri. Many of the objects have not been previously published. Each artifact is described, and its function and symbolism is discussed. Brief texts are translated. Appendices give museum registration numbers, provenance, and bibliographies.
