The format for the citations can be set in the dialog box.¹

 

Please note that reference numbers will change depending on what is currently being displayed. In other words, all of the reference numbers are dynamically-generated, and are only relevant in the current display state. If you expand or collapse any sub-sections that contain citations, the numbering will change accordingly. This way, the numbering will always make sense.
