Re: Pacific Northwest Catastrophism

If you guys get out for a field trip, I'd be interested in finding out if all the streams and creeks that empty into the big, flood cut rivers, have the same torn out, shattered and/or melted beds as I see around here. The big stuff is impressive, but the small stuff may tell us just as much, if not more, about the formation of such areas. I did a little looking and there are few images of smaller creeks, but found this image, looks like mixed angular and rounded rocks.

I'm also going to see about incorporating a creek section into the anual marathon we have in Sooke. Also I was thinking, after having climbed up portions of some of our local creeks about a bottom to top creek climb, that would sort the men from the boys for sure!

Re: Pacific Northwest Catastrophism

Thanks Nick and Lloyd for your references to Cook, and an invitation to start a new thread here on Thunderbolts. As I'm new here, I don't know how to do this, but will see if I can figure it out.

I went on a retreat these last 4 days to focus on reading Jno's web book. I've also been communicating with him and trying to clarify a few things. I think I have a handle on a good chunk of his work and could offer up a few tidbits here and there. He certainly has some refreshing insights. He is coming to the 2013 EU conference, so those of us attending can chat him up. He might even show up in this forum if the conversation gets lively.

I'll get back on this thread soon and let you know what if anything I've been able to do to set up something new.

Re: Pacific Northwest Catastrophism

OK, I just set up a new thread regarding Jno Cook's web book, "Recovering the Lost World" within this same forum group, Planetary Science. Perhaps it should be in another group, but I picked the same one this thread is in.

I mention about Cook's theory on the origin of the Venus figurines...

Re: Pacific Northwest Catastrophism

I guess I should've mentioned it earlier, but I already had started a thread for Cook's theory a few days ago.

Moderator note: the threads have been merged here

Re: Pacific Northwest Catastrophism

Gary,
Check into "debris flow" as a search for why and how boulders of various sizes or shapes end up in a river bed.
I'm wondering if there are some clues there that apply to your Shattered Ankle Alley.
