Truth be told four very important aspects lead to making the discovery of star evolution being planet formation itself:

1. Luck

With luck, well, anything is possible. The trick to getting lucky is hard work. You put in massive amounts of time and energy and you will get something out of what you are doing. Its like poker, you play enough hands sooner or later you'll get a royal flush. Life has handed me a royal flush of spades, A,K,Q,J,10. The majority of astrophysicists have two pairs, and they think they are the winners! They are the bluffers! LOL

2. Not having an astrophysics/astronomy degree.

This is by far the most important aspect alongside hard work. It is also the most ironic part. How does one NOT get an education in the star sciences and make discovery? Well, believe it or not people who are educated all think the same. They all have the same information, with the same style of thinking, with the same mindset, with the same everything. Conformity is the enemy of discovery/insight.

3. Imagination/open-mindedness

You have to let what you think you know take the back seat when trying to discover something. If your glass is already full, how can there be room for discovery? New ideas will just spill over the side!

4. Lateral thinking skills

Lateral thinking is taking a regular problem and learning how to fold it inside out, upside down, and backwards. It is learning how to combine horizontal flight of fancy thinking with vertical step by step logic. Think of lateral thinking as a graph, you have the x-axis as imagination/flight of fancy, never getting off the ground, and you have vertical/step by step logic thinking on the y-axis, which only works if you have the correct assumption, if not it doesn't move forward. Lateral thinking is like a staircase, its a mix between imagination and logic. You need both imagination and logic to solve mysteries. Without both you will go nowhere just like establishment physicists and their protoplanetary disks/big bang (which have already been falsified by the way, and replaced).
