warming stopped in 1998
- Global warming stopped in 1998: the period from December 2007 through November 2008 was the coldest 12-month span of the decade.
- this is an artifact of climate cycles
- By most measures, average temperatures this decade seem to have plateaued, but this is a result of picking an exceptionally hot year — 1998 — as a starting point. In 1998, we experienced the strongest El Niño on record. This moved massive amounts of heat from the Pacific Ocean into the atmosphere, leading to an abnormally warm year. Conversely, the last few years have seen the strongest La Niña conditions in over 20 years which had a cooling effect on global temperatures. It's not unusual for surface temperatures to show short term cooling during a long term warming trend.
