Some of the more influential scientists, mathematicians, and physicians in western history. While all of them influenced future generations, strong influences are denoted with arrows. Due to the accelerating pace of science, using a log scale for the time-line enabled more detail in more recent years. The people are positioned on the time-line with the date of their passing as an underscore, whereupon their influence typically had just reached its peak, and thereafter underwent a transition, from sparking criticism to engendering opportunistic intrigue, though the works that turned out to be the most significant might have been published decades earlier.
