...and generally when I make assumptions, I'm wrong. :) But at least for the time being, I'm going with Shock Dynamics to get things moving, and Tectonic Ratcheting to perpetuate the movement. But I thought that there are good arguments on both sides, so I moved our comments to the Earth's Magnetic Field thread, for further debate.
