Yes, the "influence" that you have on people has partly to do with what you send, and partly to do with what they receive, which isn't always the same thing, depending on the things to which they have become sensitized, due to previous experiences. Deliberately influencing someone takes this into account (hopefully for the better!), though we accidentally influence people in ways we don't realize.
