PREFACE
I have produced this list of about 100 papers in January 2001, based on notes dating back to 1949, but checked fairly thoroughly; it should be almost complete up to 1983, after which date I stopped scanning abstracts. As well as papers directly concerned with the subject, I have included a few others if they help to show the way the subject developed.

The CHRONOLOGICAL LISTING gives the references in time order, and includes brief notes by me. Fuller notes are given in the alphabetical BIBLIOGRAPHY.

Notes in quotation marks are extracts from the paper or its abstract. Notes in upright (roman) font are my attempt to summarize the content of the paper. The notes in italics are my own opinions/comments, and an attempt to give some feel for the historic context.

Throughout the notes I have used modern notation and units (except for the Blackett formula itself, and its analogues). The abbreviation R.S. stands for Royal Society of London, and R.A.S. for Royal Astronomical Society (in London).
