Tanakh commentary
Once in Canaan, Lot settled in Sodom, and Abraham settled in Hebron.
Amenhotep III wasn't pleased that Abraham was brokering alliances on the frontier, and felt obligated to get in the middle of the whole thing. So he offered a more powerful alliance — if Abraham would swear his loyalty to Egypt, the pharaoh would give Sarah a son. There are two passages describing the Covenant — in the Jahwist version, it's just a land grant, while in the Priestly version, Abraham & Sarah get new names, all of the males have to get circumcised, and Sarah would bear Isaac. It sounds like the father would be the pharaoh, or one of the other two men with him. Either way, this would install Abraham as the pharaoh's representative in Canaan, loyal to Egypt and not to Mesopotamia or Mitanni.
The pharaoh's entourage showed up, to deliver on the promise of giving Sarah a son.
Sarah gave birth to a son, as promised. The pharaoh insisted that this son inherit the Covenant, not Abraham's son by Hagar. So Abraham sent Hagar & Ishmael away.
Still, Abraham made an alliance with Abimelech, perhaps on Hagar's behalf.
