This doesn't explain why nearly all craters are circular.
With an impact velocity of ~10 km/s, and ejecta expanding radially at the speed of sound, impact craters would all be ovals, except in the extremely rare cases where the angle of incidence was zero. Yet impact craters are nearly all circular.
