Goals
  • Why set goals?
    • If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.
    • Goals have to include ways of measuring success.
    • Goals should have target dates whenever possible.
    • Do this in outline format.
      • Start with the high-level goals, and then define the sub-goals necessary to achieve them.
      • Once the top-level hierarchy gets established, the low-level items should be checked that they will actually accomplish those objectives. In a large organization, there could be many high-level objectives, and the infrastructure necessary to achieve them might be very complex.
      • Each node in the hierarchy can be owned by a different individual, or by a different team.
      • Example
    • Goals that are outside the realm of the theoretical sciences should go elsewhere (e.g., politics & history have their own folder). We might use a similar sociocratic process there, but the design philosophy of the site is that there is a time/place for everything, so we have to reinforce this with our own dedication to keeping things sorted out by category.
  • Goal: to increase the value that scientific endeavors provide to society.
    • Astronomy/Geophysics Goal: understand the solar system, including the Sun, the planets, and the moons, with particular focus on research that can help humankind, by accurately predicting natural disasters such as coronal mass ejections, meteor impacts, earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, tornadoes, etc.
      • Organize a group of collaborators for the above purpose.
      • Develop an efficient process of sorting Proven (Known), Unproven and Disproven theories.
      • Identify methods for reducing all tendencies toward error.
      • Establish a Public Library of Science Knowledge.
      • Share the wealth.
        • Teach the process to others.
          • Webinars to demonstrate the software within a sociocratic process. (People log into a service, and can see the screen of the person doing the demonstration, and can hear that person's voice.)
          • YouTube for videos to help explain our process to others.
          • Yearly conferences.
        • Teach the science that has been produced.
          • Produce online material in textbook format, at a variety of reading levels. Update as new information and insights become available.
        • Show people how to put science to work for them.
          • Inform industry leaders of opportunities to improve products & services.
        • We will know that we have succeeded when society knows that it is richer because of our efforts.
          • Keep track of tangible benefits that we have provided to society, not just for the advertising value, but to inspire ongoing efforts, and to clarify the method by which we pick objectives and strategies.
